The Pilates method of body conditioning uses resistance in a system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed by Joseph Pilates over ninety years ago. The exercises are efficient, working numerous muscles at a time. Great emphasis is placed on proper alignment which enhances posture. Making a mental connection with your body allows you to consciously change the way you function. Pain will diminish and injury can be prevented when muscles are balanced with equal strength and flexibility, allowing for proper spinal alignment. After a session, you will feel like you’ve had a massage.
Think of Pilates more as a body therapy than a fitness routine. Most fitness routines, sports, jobs and hobbies create an over use of certain muscles which can result in misalignment of bones. This can cause nerve pain and damage.
Pilates re balances muscles so the skeletal system can be in ideal alignment. In addition to specific movements to strengthen and tone muscles, Pilates focuses on breathing to improve the circulatory system and coordinating movements to challenge and improve neurological function.
